September 2010 Intensive Workshop

ARIAS•U.S. will be conducting the next Arbitrator Training Workshop on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at the New York City offices of Sidley Austin LLP. This program, which will run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., is specifically designed for newer arbitrators and is required for anyone who intends to apply for ARIAS arbitrator certification under Options B or C of the Experience/Knowledge Component.

In addition, on Monday, September 13, a pre-program reception will take place at 6:15 p.m. at Sidley Austin. This evening event is an integral part of the workshop since it allows for an open exchange of ideas about the scenario that is the subject of the next day’s mock arbitration and provides an opportunity to meet the people who will be involved in the next day’s sessions.

The Program

The program has been structured so that all attendees will have the opportunity to participate on a panel during a hands-on mock arbitration. Two simultaneous mock arbitrations will be held, involving nine arbitrator students in each room. Panel members will be presented with arguments by participants from one of two law firms. They will then deliberate “in private,” in front of the other participants.

Before and after the mock sessions, topical discussions will address what to do when first contacted for an arbitration, guidelines on how to deal with conflicts, disclosure, ex parte communications, discovery issues, and the preparation of a final award. Experienced arbitrators will instruct, observe, and provide helpful feedback on how to handle various issues. The Tuesday program schedule is as follows:

8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Opening Remarks/General Session
9:45 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Break / Move to Two Hearing Rooms
10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Mock Arbitration Panels
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Lunch
1:30 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. Continuation of Arbitration Panels
2:45 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Break / Return to General Session Room
3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Continuation of General Session

This course applies toward ARIAS•U.S. certification requirements. Due to the program format, enrollment is limited to 18 panel participants. This workshop is for ARIAS•U.S. members only.

For a payment of $345 (including taxes and credit card fee), workshop costs and some food expenses are covered. Transportation costs (air, car, taxi) and overnight accommodations are to be handled on an individual basis. Lodging suggestions are provided below.
