Robert A. Whitney, a Member of the law firm Sulloway & Hollis P.L.L.C. in its Insurance and Reinsurance Practice Group, has over 25 years of experience in complex insurance coverage, bad faith, reinsurance, insurance regulatory affairs and compliance, and commercial litigation, representing insurers and reinsurers in coverage and bad faith disputes before state and federal courts throughout the country. Mr. Whitney has also represented ceding companies and reinsurers in arbitrations.  He was previously the Corporate Secretary for several insurance companies.  Mr. Whitney was also Deputy Commissioner and General Counsel of the Massachusetts Division of Insurance for four years.

Mr. Whitney has frequently spoken on issues relating to insurance coverage, reinsurance, health care, regulatory affairs and bad faith.  Most recently, Mr. Whitney spoke at the Boston Bar Association in 2019 on the topic: “Using Reinsurance to Lower Premiums for Health Insurance.”  Mr. Whitney has also written extensively on insurance and reinsurance topics.  He is the co-editor and chapter author of the Massachusetts Liability Insurance Manual (4th Ed. 2020).  Mr. Whitney’s most recent law review article, “Transitioning to a New View: Coming to See Health Insurance Coverage for Gender Dysphoria in a New Light,” was published in the Connecticut Insurance Law Journal at the end of 2019.

Mr. Whitney is a graduate of Brown University and Boston University Law School. He is an ARIAS-US Certified Arbitrator.

Managing the Consolidation of Arbitrations – Issues and Guidelines
decisions on arbitration consolidation and will then explore the issues involved for panels in reviewing requests for consolidation. The panel will propose a “tool kit” of guidelines for arbitrators and umpires to consider when reviewing such consolidation requests, and for managing the consolidated arbitration as it moves forward.
