Mr. Wallis has been active in the reinsurance world for over 5 decades, the last 21 + years of which, primarily, as a reinsurance consultant active in arbitration matters and, most recently, in a consultancy capacity as Executive Director of the international reinsurance industry association, IRU, Inc., better known as the Intermediaries & Reinsurance Underwriters Association, or IRUA.
Initially appointed in September 2012 as Interim Executive Director, he was named Executive Director in November 2013. This consulting assignment extends his connection with the IRUA ( see www.irua.org) as he previously served as a board member for the previous 15 years. IRUA is the original reinsurance trade association specializing in ongoing educational activities at all experience levels for both domestic and international reinsurance market participants. In addition, the IRUA offers a Scholars program whereby interns at member companies may apply to submit an essay on a re(in)insurance themed topic and potentially win a substantial cash award. As a result of this involvement he remains current in the present P&C reinsurance marketplace and environment.
From 2000 until he retired in late 2011 he was engaged as a consultant by Mapfre Re primarily managing the Chatham Re legacy portfolio. He was also involved in several corporate projects including the establishment of the operation in Canada.
His active business experience is heavily underwriting focused from both a U.S. and U.K. background and in addition, he has extensive experience in senior management and corporate affairs. Also, from his experience managing the Chatham Re run-off he has developed extensive experience in claims matters, including commutations and ADR.
He has been appointed as an arbitrator or umpire (or sole arbitrator) by cedants and reinsurers/retrocessionaires located in the U.S., U.K., Continental Europe and Asia. His past consulting, litigation support and expert witness work has, in addition, included engagements on behalf of primary insureds and captive companies.
