Biography

After 40 years of insurance, reinsurance and litigation practice, Steve Gilford joined in JAMS in June 2018 to focus full time on service as a mediator and arbitrator and has now participated as a neutral in a variety of insurance and commercial disputes (current resume is on JAMS website). Steve is certified as an arbitrator and mediator by ARIAS US and the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois and as a mediator by the Center for Conflict Resolution where he is also a member of its Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

Steve has extensive experience in trial and appellate litigation, domestic and international arbitration, mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. During his career, he has been involved in almost every area of insurance, including CGL, property/business interruption, D&O, E&O, cyber, recall, EPL and life and health, as well as facultative and treaty reinsurance.

Steve has represented policyholders, captives, insurers and ceding and assuming companies in a wide range of litigation (in trial and appellate courts) and in arbitrations in the U.S., Bermuda, Canada and England.

Prior to joining JAMS, Steve co-chaired the Insurance Practice at Proskauer where he opened its Chicago office in 2008 after 20 years as a partner at Mayer Brown. He has written and presented on various insurance, reinsurance and arbitration topics and authors “Insurance Coverage for Data Breaches and Unauthorized Privacy Disclosures”, updated annually in PLI’s Proskauer on Privacy. He also teaches a short course on insurance at Duke Law School.
