Jim Macdonald is the owner of JW Macdonald Associates, LLC, a consulting firm dedicated to the insurance and reinsurance industries. His consulting services are composed of dispute related services and strategic services (including underwriting audits and acquisition due diligence assessments). Dispute-related services include matters in litigation or arbitration with Jim serving as a consultant, party-appointed arbitrator, or expert witness. Since he became a full time consultant in 2006, he has completed over two-dozen engagements either as an expert witness or as a consultant.

Over the last four decades, Jim has developed a broad experience base as an insurer and reinsurer. This includes the resolution of dozens of complex treaty reinsurance disputes totaling over $300 million as the Chief Underwriting officer for the AIG's largest business unit, AIG Risk Management. In the mid-1990s, as the President & COO of CNA HealthPro, he guided the resolution of numerous large or complex claims, including matters related to D&O and all forms of professional liability. More recently, as the Chief Underwriting Officer for ACE-INA in North America, he was responsible for over a $1 billion in ceded reinsurance through more than 100 treaties. In this capacity, he also addressed claims issues through his participation on ACE USA senior management claims reviews and his active participation of the ACE Global financial security committee.

Highly regarded within the industry, Jim serves as the terrorism insurance expert for the International Risk Management Institute. He has also served on the Executive Committee or Advisory Boards of Munich American Reinsurance, the NCCI Residual Market Pool Board, ACE_INA Insurance Group, the AMA's National Patient Safety Foundation, and the RAND Institute for Civil Justice.

A graduate of Notre Dame, Jim’s professional designations include CPCU and ARM designations from the AICPCU Institute. His is also a former licensed P&C insurance agent in Pennsylvania.
