Since 2004, W. Mark Wigmore has been a Managing Director of Avalon Consulting, LLC, an insurance and reinsurance consulting firm. In 2013, Mr. Wigmore joined the Board of Directors of Electric Insurance Company of Beverly, MA and has chaired the Audit Committee since 2014.
Prior to forming Avalon, Mr. Wigmore served as President and CEO of St. Paul Re, Inc., where he oversaw all assumed reinsurance run-off operations of the then recently merged St. Paul Travelers Companies. In the US, those run-off entities included, among others, St. Paul Re, F & G Re, Travelers Specialty Property Casualty Co., Constitution State Insurance Company and the assumed operations of Gulf Insurance Company. In the UK, Mr. Wigmore was Chairman of St. Paul Reinsurance Company, Ltd., and also headed St. Paul Specialist Services, Ltd., the run-off manager for St. Paul Re (UK), Unionamerica Insurance Company, Ltd. and St. Katherine’s Insurance Company. Mr. Wigmore joined The St. Paul Companies in June 2002 to lead the assumed reinsurance run-off upon the completion of the IPO of St. Paul’s ongoing reinsurance operations.
From 1997 through 2002, he was Vice President of Travelers Special Liability Group’s Ceded Reinsurance Department. In that capacity, Mr. Wigmore headed the unit responsible for ceded reinsurance claims resulting from Travelers APH exposure. Mr. Wigmore began his insurance career in 1988 in the Litigation Division of Travelers Law Department. For nine years he held various positions within Travelers Law Department, ultimately being named Associate General Counsel. Throughout that period, Mr. Wigmore provided legal advice with respect to coverage litigation arising out of asbestos and environmental pollution claims.
Mr. Wigmore has served as a Lecturer in Law at the University of Connecticut School of Law, where he taught Principles of Reinsurance, Insurance Litigation and An Introduction to the London Insurance Market in the Insurance Law Center’s LL.M. program.
